Our mission is to create new possibilities in farming

So we have thousands of young people that are migrating every year. An ocean that is totally exploited. Fish is becoming unaffordable for the poorest people. We are facing the challenges of climate change. Rain is getting less every year and groundwater levels are declining every year. You could say that we need a serious solution to tackle all these problems. The ReFarm Africa Project is the solution that Gambia needs.

Design & technology

A new way of farming where aquaponics meets sandponics

This project set out to develop an affordable farming system based on aquaponics principles. While aquaponics offers a sustainable solution for the future of farming, most systems remain expensive due to the need for complex filtration to remove nitrates from the water.

By combining aquaponics with sandponics, we solved this problem. We developed a low-cost system that eliminates the need for expensive filters. The result is an efficient farming model that produces abundant food, uses minimal water, and is accessible to the poorest communities. We designed a large prototype for community use and a smaller version that individuals can set up in their own gardens.

How this method will change farming

The traditional way of farming compared to our concept

Our farming method consistently outperforms traditional agriculture across the board. While conventional farming remains vulnerable to climate change, seasonal limitations, and low yields, our approach offers a sustainable alternative. Crucially, we solve the issue of high water consumption—a major flaw in traditional farming that threatens regional water security.

Harvesting depends on the season

Traditional farming in Africa is largely dependent on the seasons. Most crops rely on rainfall, so planting and harvesting follow the natural wet and dry cycles. When rains are late or unpredictable, food production and income are directly affected.

This concept makes year-round harvesting possible by creating a controlled growing environment. Water and nutrients are continuously recycled within the system, allowing plants to grow independently of rainfall and seasonal changes. This ensures a steady and reliable food supply throughout the year.

High water consumption

Traditional farming uses large amounts of water, putting pressure on local resources. Lower groundwater levels reduce water availability, harm soil fertility, stress ecosystems, and can even cause the ground to sink or become salty, threatening both farming and communities in Africa.

By reusing nearly all water in a closed-loop system, our solution cuts water use by 90%, relieving pressure on local groundwater while enabling sustainable growth. As groundwater levels return to normal, water availability improves, soil fertility is restored, ecosystems recover, and the risk of land sinking or salinization is reduced.

Extremely labor-intensive

Traditional farming is often heavy and very labor-intensive. Farmers spend long hours planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting by hand, often using minimal machinery. This physically demanding work requires significant effort while still being vulnerable to unpredictable weather, pests, and low soil fertility, which can limit both yield and income.

Aquaponics farming can significantly ease the lives of African women. With automated water and nutrient systems, planting, watering, and maintenance require far less physical effort. It reduces the time spent on labor-intensive tasks, allowing the farmers to focus on education, family, or other income-generating activities, while still ensuring a steady and reliable food supply.

Use of toxic chemicals is common

The use of chemical pesticides is widespread but highly damaging to the soil and environment. Over time, these chemicals deplete the soil, leading to desertification. This is a serious problem affecting regions all around the world.

100% organic

The system is fully organic; chemical pesticides would be lethal to the fish. We use botanical extracts, including garlic, chili, and pepper, as natural insect repellents, maintaining a safe environment for both fish and plants.

Low yields and smaller fruits

While traditional farming served us thousands of years, its reliance on vast land use and unpredictable resources makes it a “low-yield” relic compared to the precision of aquaponics. By mimicking nature’s own filtration cycles with aquaponics, we can grow more, in less space, with a much lighter footprint.

By providing a steady flow of unlimited nutrients and water, aquaponics enables stronger growth to plants and significantly larger harvests of bigger fruits.

Healthy soil is the foundation of farming. When land is degraded, harvests disappear and farmers are pushed into crisis, a challenge affecting many regions of West Africa.

An aquaponics farm does not need fertile soil. It can be built on places that are not fertile or areas that are slowly turning into desert.

Traditional farming usually offers few jobs per hectare, often limited to seasonal work during planting and harvest periods, with employment that is highly dependent on weather and crop cycles. Work conditions are significantly worse compared to work conditions on aquaponics farms.

Aquaponics farms tend to create 2–3 times more jobs than traditional farms on the same area of land, while also providing more consistent income and better working conditions. Year-round production enables permanent employment, with jobs ranging from system operation and fish care to planting, harvesting, monitoring, processing, distribution and sales.
